Design work is charged at $75 per hour*. As each job is individual, UniPrint likes to quote job by job to make sure that you get the most accurate cost before proceeding with your job.
* This rate does NOT include GST - external customers will be charged GST
I require some UWA images for a powerpoint presentation. Where can I obtain these?
The University has a small gallery of images available for download. If you are unable to find the image you require on this site contact UniPrint’s design studio. I would like some images for a document I am designing. Is there a stock site I can look at?
If the images are UWA related, contact UniPrint’s design studio. There is a charge of $75 per hour* or part thereof for search/retrieval from the image archive. UniPrint also has an account with iStock photos that you can search through and advise UniPrint of the images you would like. UniPrint can purchase these at a cheaper rate than you are able to obtain them.

What format does my file need to be for best quality printing?
The preferred file type is an Adobe pdf. This will ensure that all the formatting completed on your computer is retained when opened on a UniPrint computer. If your document has elements which bleed off the page, ensure that these elements extend past the edge of the page and that your document has crop marks for trimming.
What format should my mailing list be for mailouts?
Please provide your mailing list in Excel spreadsheet format (.xls , .xlsx, .csv) with all data separated in to columns, for example:
first name | last name | org | add1 | locality | state | postcode |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
John | Smith | Smith Corporation | 100 Main street | Perth | WA | 6000 |
What resolution should my images be to ensure they print clearly?
Images should be 300dpi (dots per inch) at the actual size you wish to print them. If you have Photoshop you can check the image size. If you are taking your own images ensure your camera’s resolution settings are set to high. As a general rule, images under 1 Mb will not be suitable for quality printing unless they are used very small within your document.

What is the usual turn-around time for a job?
This will depend on the complexity of the job. For small, straightforward jobs it is usual to allow at least five working days for artwork to be completed, and five working days for print production.
Larger jobs will require more time to design, and may also require additional time if there are extra requirements such as special binding, foiling, laminating or diecutting, for example. While planning your job, it is always best to consider the design and production time frames early so that you allow sufficient time for the document to be produced in time to meet your deadline.
Page layout
I am setting a DL brochure. What margins should I use so it folds correctly?
Please follow our DL brochure margin guide for instructions on how to set DL brochure margins.
What does 'bleed' mean?
Bleed is the area that goes beyond the edge of the sheet before trimming – the area to be trimmed off after printing.
If any elements in your document, such as images or blocks of colour, extend all the way to the edge of the page, it is adviseable to extend these elements 3mm beyond the width or height of the page. This is called bleed. It ensures that when the printed page is trimmed to size it will cut through the image edge, and will not leave an unsightly white mark at the trimmed edge. Files with bleed should also include crop marks so UniPrint will know where the file is to be trimmed.
Please be aware that some programs, such as the Microsoft Office suite, do not allow bleed to be set. You should avoid using these programs for page layout. If these programs are your only option, avoid having images or blocks of colour which go to the edge of the page. If you do not have access to programs that allow bleed to be set, UniPrint may be able to make the required adjustments at extra cost.
For further information and illustrations please see our 'Bleed and trim marks' guide below.

What does 'trim' mean?
Trim marks are crucial for the guillotining process as this is the only way for guillotine operator to tell where to cut.
For further information and illustrations please see our 'Bleed and trim marks' guide below.

Thesis print and bind
Are there any limits to how big the thesis is when they?re bound?
We can bind books that are up to 400 pieces of paper thick – so if its printed double sided that means 800 pages with no issue
Can I bring a printed copy of my thesis and have you photocopy the rest of the copies?
Yes, however we don’t recommend it as the quality of photocopies will not be as good as a direct print from a digital file. Also note submitting your job online gives access to cheaper printing prices.
Can I bring a Word file or something that isn?t a PDF for my thesis printing?
With our online ordering submission you can upload your finished thesis as the preferred PDF format or as a word file (and it will convert it to a PDF for you), you can even use it to join several documents together into one PDF. However whenever you do make a PDF from word, we suggest you check it thoroughly. When you are submitting your job – you can download the generated PDF and save it to your desktop for checking.
Can I bring printed copies of my thesis already printed and have them bound?
Yes, we can bind printing that you’ve provided to us.
Can I include a CD in my thesis?
We can provide adhesive CD pockets for your thesis, and we can also burn CD’s for you for an additional fee.
Can I print A3 pages in my thesis?
Yes you can, but you must tell us which pages you need printed as A3.
Can you adjust my thesis if there?s anything wrong with it?
We do have the limited ability to modify your thesis (such as removing an errant full stop or making small adjustments to your margins), but ideally, you should provide the thesis to us in a state that’s ready to print.
If we have to do any major changes to your thesis for any reason, then a fee will be incurred and the production times will be affected.
Do I have to tell you what pages of my thesis I want in colour?
When you submit your thesis for printing by our online ordering process you can choose to print all pages black and white, all pages in colour or you can go and specify each page (note: black and white is cheaper than colour printing).
Do the temporary bound copies of my thesis have a plastic cover and a black card on the back?
Yes, it does.
How do I print and pay for my thesis if I am overseas?
When you submit via our online ordering, you pay by credit card and can specify the delivery instructions.
How long does it take to print and bind my thesis?
Submit by our online ordering and:
- Temporary binding will normally be ready to collect from the shop by the time you get there.
- Permanent softbound versions are normally done within 1 working week
- Permanent Hard case bound versions normally take 2 weeks from the end of the week they are submitted.
How many copies of my thesis do I need?
There is no set amount, if in doubt, ask your school or supervisor, they should be able to advise how many copies are required for both your temporary bound and permanent bound copies. Note: You can order and pay for as many personal copies as you like.
How much does thesis printing and binding cost?
When you submit your thesis via our online ordering the price is automatically calculated. You will get the price before it’s actually submitted.
If you wish to have the school pay for it you need to ask them for a BU (Business Unit) and PG (Project Grant) number and the name and contact details of the accounts contact as we must have the costs approved by the school before we can begin production.

What binding do I need for my thesis?
There are three types of binding
for theses:
- Temporary spiral binding (for copies submitted for marking)
- Traditional hard cover binding (for permanent copies)
- Softbound (cheaper option for permanent copies)
All versions are available for jobs submitted via our online ordering.
What colour will the cover of my permanent bound thesis be?
When the school is covering the payment of your thesis, please check with your school regarding their requirements. Personal copies can be any colour you wish – note: you can order a mix of colour’s to satisfy you’re own and the schools requirements.
What do I need to provide for printing and binding of my thesis?
You can upload a PDF or a word file (dot forget to check it carefully) via our online ordering process. If you wish to have the school pay for it you need to ask them for a BU (Business Unit) and PG (project Grant) Number and the name and contact details of the accounts contact as we must have the costs approved by the school before we can begin production.
What time should I come in to have my thesis printed and bound? Do you take bookings?
You can submit your thesis for printing 24/7 via our online ordering process. If you need someone to help you – you can come into the UniPrint Shop (1st floor of the Guild Commercial Building) weekdays between 9.30am and 4.00pm.
What type of paper will my thesis be printed on?
We print all thesis on high quality 80gsm paper, for both temporary and permanent bound copies.
Will the school pay for my own copies of my thesis?
If you wish to have the school pay for it you need to ask them for a BU (Business Unit) and PG (Project Grant) number and the name and contact details of the accounts contact as we must have the costs approved by the school before we can begin production.
